Pico Paradise was born from the essence of a child who grew up immersed in the nature of Pico Island, developing a deep connection with every trail, every volcanic rock, and every mist that wrapped around the mountain. That connection became a passion that now comes to life, inviting others to slow down, take a deep breath, and truly feel the grandeur of nature.

Founded in 2024 by Ricardo Ávila, Pico Paradise was created with a clear purpose: to share knowledge about the island’s natural wonders and provide authentic, personalized experiences. Here, we believe that more than just reaching a destination, it’s about experiencing every step with intensity, allowing the serenity of the mountain to wash away the rush of everyday life.

With great attention to detail and deep respect for the environment, we offer experiences designed for those seeking more than just an adventure – a true immersion in nature, a moment to disconnect and reconnect with themselves.

Guide Ricardo Ávila

Ricardo Ávila was born and raised on Pico Island, a true Picaroto at heart, shaped by the power of the land and the vastness of the surrounding nature. From an early age, his life was deeply connected to the island's natural environment. Growing up in a farming family, he accompanied his father in daily livestock work, milking cows and crossing breathtaking landscapes. Every trip to the fields was a new opportunity to admire Pico’s beauty—whether under a clear and serene sky or while facing nature’s harshest conditions. This constant connection with the land strengthened his bond with nature and nurtured a deep respect for its balance and grandeur.

During his teenage years, he found a new way to explore his homeland—trail running. Venturing through the island’s trails, he quickly stood out in regional competitions while also completing a technical degree in tourism, a qualification that would open the doors to a new challenge: the mountain. In 2015, he began his internship as a mountain guide, already having completed 10 ascents to the summit of Pico. Since then, his passion has only grown, and today, with over 550 ascents, he knows the mountain like few others—not just for its terrain but also for the diversity of people who climb it.

Over the years, interacting with travelers and adventurers from around the world sparked a new interest in Ricardo: the study of human behavior. Fascinated by the personal stories and challenges he encountered during his climbs, he felt the need to deepen his understanding of the human mind and help others overcome difficult moments. So, in 2020, amidst the pandemic, he moved to Lisbon to pursue a degree in Psychology, embarking on a new journey of self-discovery and growth. Currently, he is finishing his master’s degree at the University of Coimbra, blending his passion for nature with his desire to understand and support people on their life journeys.

His story reflects a perfect balance between the strength of the mountain and the depth of the human mind, seeing nature not only as a place for adventure but also as a refuge for balance and introspection.
